Greening up the dairy. Huls Farm in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana gets a $1.2MM methane digester

It’s safe to say, Spencer and Inez Huls didn’t envision the day Huls Farm fired up the methane digester.

The methane digester got its first run in early January – some months past the Huls’ centennial anniversary in the valley. And when the replacement sensor arrives in the mail this week the Huls’ $1.2 million investment will officially begin turning the farm into a leaner, greener business.

The methane digester – a stunningly high-tech process that ultimately brews cow manure into electricity and heat-producing bio gas and leaves a rich, market-ready fertilizer as a byproduct – brings the family-operated farm fully into the green power revolution.

The two tank, 60,000 gallon capacity digester is the only one of its kind in agricultural use in Montana, Huls said.

The push toward a greener farm is not new here.
