Susan Lykes Joins Orton Family Foundation Board

The Orton Family Foundation http://www.orton.org continues to diversify its Board of Trustees with the key appointment of Susan Traylor Lykes, who brings a lifetime of experience living and working in the Rocky Mountain West and a sharp understanding of national land use and conservation issues.

Susan is an advocate for non-profit land conservation and a former town planner. She is in her third term on the board of the Land Trust Alliance, a national group supporting land conservation in America. She is serving her fourth term on the board of the Teton Regional Land Trust.

In the early 1990s, Susan worked as a town planner in Park City, Utah, and was one of the principal authors of the city’s Sensitive Lands Ordinance. After settling in the Teton region, she served for a year as a member of the citizens’ committee to rewrite the Teton County, Idaho, Comprehensive Plan.

“The Orton Family Foundation’s Heart & Soul approach to small-town planning and community engagement has the ability to produce a more durable and usable plan for a community,” said Lykes. “But, importantly, it also has the potential to enlighten citizens of different backgrounds on how much they have in common, strengthening not just the community’s future but its present.”

Susan was born and raised in the Denver area, a third-generation Coloradan. She earned a Masters degree in Rural, Town and Regional Planning from the University of Montana and a Bachelors degree in Mathematics with a minor in Environmental Studies from the University of Vermont. Susan and her husband, Mayo, live in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
