Laurie Miller and Extreme Ski Filmmaker Warren Miller Launch After-School Program for Young Entrepreneurs in Missoula

Monday, January 12, 2009- 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Holiday Inn Downtown at the Park – 200 S. Pattee

The City Club Missoula January forum guest speakers, Laurie Miller, and her famous extreme ski filmmaker husband Warren Miller, will present their after-school program that will teach middle-school children the ropes of starting and running a business. The program is a product of the Warren Miller Freedom Foundation http://www.warrenmiller.org/ , which Laurie Miller founded and runs, and which will commence at C.S. Porter Middle School in January.

“These are life skills that aren't taught as much as they should be at home and aren't taught as much as they should be in school,” said Laurie Miller.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Linda McCulloch said, “If we hope to solve all the major problems in this world, and I'm still an optimist and think we can, we must continue to work together to provide our children a variety of learning opportunities.”

The young entrepreneurship program runs 10 weeks and will teach business basics. Students get a quick overview of what it means to own a business, then dive right in, Laurie Miller said. “We try to get them going that first week with what it means to provide customer service. Once they get out and do something and make some money, everything we have to tell them starts to make more sense.” The goal, Laurie Miller said, isn't to create a bunch of money-obsessed grade-schoolers. “We talk a lot about ethical business, but it's really about problem-solving and learning to be independent.”
