The bitter recession has sent layoffs rippling through Silicon Valley this holiday season, but the way that one San Francisco startup tried to help former workers find new jobs says something about the networking ethos of the high-tech economy.

"No way I would be working here without the personal assistance I received," said Derek Moore, 33, who recently joined the Mozilla Corp. as a network systems engineer after being dismissed in October by Searchme.com.
