A new way of learning

A ping-pong ball zoomed down the hallway as students high-fived one another over the successful launch.

While most high school students would be sent to detention for such behavior, this unique group of students received encouragement from their teacher.

As part of the Energy Academy at Campbell County High School http://www-cchs.ccsd.k12.wy.us/ , the students were working on energy-based projects — including a launched ping-pong ball — aimed at putting them on the pathway to futures in a variety of careers, many of them energy related.

But that doesn’t mean all the students want to enter careers as engineers or welders. Sophomore Megan Schinestuhl has always wanted to be an elementary school teacher. Enrolled in the inaugural class of the Energy Academy, she is getting hands-on experience to prepare for her first teaching assignment years from now.

“It’s giving me a lot of insight into the career and college I’m interested in going to,” Schinestuhl said. “I understand now what I need to do with my education and how to apply myself.”

Started this fall, the Energy Academy is the only career academy in the state. Established to keep youth in school and focused on their futures, the Energy Academy is based on the three Rs: relationships, rigor and relevance.
