Montana DNRC director: State agencies moving on plans to aid wood products industry

Montana’s state agencies are actively pursuing strategies to assist the state’s lumber mills and wood-products industries, which face serious challenges in the midst of the nation’s economic crisis, according to Mary Sexton, Director of the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation.

"Housing starts and other building projects have stagnated and the demand for wood products has diminished," Sexton said. "The downturn is posing serious hardships for manufacturers, logging contractors and haulers – and for the workers and communities that depend on these jobs."

Sexton said leaders of state agencies are working closely with the Montana Congressional delegation on a range of options to address to these challenges in the short- and long-term.
