Governors Energy advice will be heard

The good news is that the bipartisan Western Governors Association, including its vice chairman, Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer, is continuing to put pressure on Washington to quickly adopt a national energy policy that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The better news is that in President-elect Barack Obama’s administration, the governors can expect somebody to be listening.

The governors, who represent the nation’s largest energy-producing states containing nearly all of its on-shore oil reserves and two-thirds of its coal, have a long wish list for Obama’s first 100 days in office. They recommend annual spending of tens of billions of dollars to develop clean energy technology, as well as creation of an aggressive goal to reduce emissions that cause global warming through a mandatory national system of “market-based” mechanisms.
