Montana State University receives $66.9 million carbon sequestration grant
| November 18, 2008 |
The U.S. Department of Energy on Monday awarded a $66.9 million, eight-year grant to a research partnership headed by Montana State University http://www.montana.edu/ to test new methods of using coal and other fossil fuels without contributing to global climate change.
The Big Sky Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership will use the money to demonstrate that underground geologic formations can store huge volumes of carbon dioxide economically, safely and permanently. Researchers plan to inject up to one million tons of the gas into sandstone beneath southwestern Wyoming.
Montana’s Democratic Sens. Max Baucus and Jon Tester and Republican U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg announced the award in press releases.
