Bozeman schools focus on raising math scores

Most Bozeman public school students are doing very well in reading, but roughly one-third struggle in math, and many of those having a hard time are low-income students.

The Bozeman School Board heard administrators report Monday night on students’ test scores on Montana’s standardized tests, as well as a description of steps Bozeman schools are taking to raise crucial academic skills.

Under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, all schools are required to bring 100 percent of their students up to grade level in reading and math by the year 2014. To reach that goal, the state of Montana sets test-score targets for schools, and ratchets them up every few years to get closer to 100 percent.
