Role of US in Darfur Genocide at MSU Lecture on Oct 28 – John Pendergast

On Tuesday, October 28th in MSU’s Strand Union Building ballrooms John Prendergast, one of the world’s leading voices in bringing attention to genocide in Darfur and other war-torn nations in Africa, will speak at 7:30 pm. “Darfur is an issue brought forth by both John McCain and Barack Obama during the recent Presidential debates,” stated Carmen McSpadden, Director of the MSU Leadership Institute. “And because of the political attention, the timeliness for MSU students and the public to learn about the current issues in Darfur could not come at a more important time,” McSpadden added.

Prendergast, senior adviser of the International Crisis Group (ICG) and co-founder of the ENOUGH stop-genocide project, is sponsored by the MSU Leadership Institute, ASMSU and University Studies. The ICG is a non-profit organization that scouts out geopolitical conflicts and then issues reports that offer intelligence, analysis, and policy recommendations.

Prendergast has been part of three episodes of CBS’ 60 Minutes which earned an Emmy Award for Best Continuing News Coverage and is helping to develop two additional episodes around the issues of Darfur. “In addition, he is helping to spearhead a campaign involving the NBA to widen awareness on Darfur, as well as a campaign to end the violence against women and girls in the Congo,” stated McSpadden.

Prendergast, formerly an adviser in the White House and U.S. Department of State, is known for speaking frequently and powerfully about inhumanity in Africa’s war-torn nations. He has authored eight books on Africa, much of the material for which was gathered during numerous trips, some illegal, across various borders. His latest book is Not on Our Watch, that he co-authored with "Hotel Rwanda" actor Don Cheadle; which recently made the New York Times bestseller list. Prendergast will sign books at the MSU Bookstore at noon on Tuesday.

Live music by String Serenades starting at 7:00 pm will introduce the lecture. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at http://www.ticketswest.com, Bobcat Ticket Office and all Bozeman TicketsWest outlets and at the door.
