Free broadband plan clears hurdle

Free broadband for the masses, a goal of Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin, inched closer to reality last week after the agency’s engineering office concluded there is no technical reason not to proceed with the plan.
The conclusion is a setback for T-Mobile, which has bitterly complained that the plan would result in service disruptions for its mobile data customers. T-Mobile owns the swath of spectrum (called “AWS-1”) that abuts the AWS-3 spectrum the FCC intends to use. The AWS-3 block is currently idle.
Martin, reached Friday when the report was released, was jubilant. “This is a critical step in moving forward” with free broadband for America.
