Billings Chamber tries for local-option sales tax

The Billings Chamber of Commerce/Convention and Visitors Bureau plans to blitz the 2009 Legislature with bus loads of supporters who will try to convince lawmakers to allow local communities to enact a voter-approved local-option sales tax.

Previous efforts to pass local-option taxes have all crashed and burned, often criticized by rural legislators who have complained that much of the tax burden would fall on rural Montanans who travel to larger cities to shop.
