Russian computer roulette in Billings

Cyber criminals, apparently Russians, are running a sneaky and costly computer virus that has infected hundreds of Billings-area computers. They stole more than $40,000 from one man’s credit card accounts.

The virus shows up as an icon or an e-mail claiming to be an antivirus program or update for Vista 2008 from the Microsoft Windows Securities Center. The icon window has the usual red "X" in the upper-right hand corner. But clicking on this "X" doesn’t close the icon window. Instead, it loads the virus onto the computer, often in the background, without the user’s knowledge.
