New Game Lets Teens (and Adults) Simulate Running a Business – "Johnny Money"

When I was a kid, my biggest entrepreneurial endeavors were selling 5-cent Dixie cups of Kool-Aid at my parents’ garage sale (I made $2 in a day!) and other various spur-of-the-moment ventures friends and I would concoct out of boredom.

But today kids are considering starting their own (real) businesses at younger and younger ages.

The National Federation of Independent Business’s Young Entrepreneur Foundation and University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School today released a game to help teens feel what being a small business owner is all about. The Internet-based game – Johnny Money http://www.johnnymoney.com/ – lets them simulate running a small retail store for 24 months, asking them to select the name, products and price mark-ups, advertising budgets, hire employees, manage inventory and other typical decisions new business owners must make. It includes a teacher’s manual so schools can use it to help teach entrepreneurship in the classroom.
