National Timber Framers Guild to host 5 day project to develop structures by the old mill site in Missoula and they need your help.

August 8, 2008View for printing

Other than the Caras Park Pavilion, shade can be scarce along the Clark Fork's downtown riverfront.

“There's nowhere you can sit in the shade, or get out of the weather in case a thunderstorm rolls in,” said Jennifer Anthony, engineer for the Silver Park Bench Shelter Project.

Although Missoula's newest city park isn't slated to be finished until sometime next year, community members are determined to get a head start.

“What we're doing now - think of it as a tune-up,” said project leader Geoff Badenoch.

The project, which was Anthony's brainchild, involves building three bench shelters to be placed along the Clark Fork River within a 14.5-acre stretch designated as the future Silver Park.

The bench shelters will open for public use as soon as construction is finished, even though the park will not be complete.

How you can help

Host families are needed for the Timber Frame Guild members conducting the bench shelter workshop Sept. 21-26. Also needed are businesses, restaurants, service clubs and individuals to sponsor or provide meals for workers.

To help the project reach its fundraising goal, tax-deductible donations can be made to Bench Shelter Project c/o Home Resource, 825 W. Kent Ave., Missoula, MT 59801, or online at http://www.homeresource.org/volunteer/silverpark.asp. Also, visit Home Resource's wish list online to see a selection of materials needed for the project.

Volunteers are needed to work a few hours, a few days or all week during the project. Kids ages 12 and older are welcome to participate in timber framing. Registration is due by Sept. 8, and those interested can register at http://www.tfguild.org. All registered participants are covered by the event insurance.

For any other project information, contact Jennifer Anthony at 406-721-7833.
