Telecommuting benefits staff, employer

Eight and a half years ago, Microsoft employee Alison Ellard was pregnant and needed a nap.
"Literally, I was at the end of my pregnancy, and by the end of the work week I was having a really hard time (with energy)," said Ellard of Redmond, now in her early 40s. "I asked my then-manager if I could work Wednesdays at home, and he was totally open to it. It turns out I actually got more done on that day than the other days."
