University of Montana protesters win award for sweatshop sit-in
| July 25, 2008 |
It's hard for school officials to forget or ignore the Students for Economic and Social Justice at the University of Montana.
It is the student group that successfully orchestrated several high-profile events last academic year to raise awareness about sweatshop horrors and labor injustices around the globe.
The sweat-free fashion show they held last year was unique, even by campus standards. The show encouraged students to support local retailers whose clothes are made by companies that provide a safe working environment and offer good-paying jobs to their employees. * But what earned the students statewide attention was the nonviolent sit-in they held in UM President George Dennison's office to protest the university's refusal to support an anti-sweatshop policy for the companies it hires to produce items with the UM name and logos.
