Startiing up: How much time do you waste reading and writing e-mails?
| June 3, 2008 |
My life's work is evaluating the most innovative new technologies intended to make our lives easier and more efficient, so you'd think I'd be a proponent of using these technologies. But I'm throwing my hands up at one of the most ubiquitous technologies ever invented - e-mail.
Starting Monday, I'm going off the grid. That's right, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, I am conducting an experiment to see if I can be more efficient at my job without it.
Let's face it: Most of us have become slaves to e-mail. I've gone back and analyzed my e-mail traffic for the last few months and on average, I receive about 150 e-mails a day that need my attention, never mind the garbage. If I spend just two minutes reading and replying to those e-mails, I'm spending five hours a day just working on e-mail. This is insane.
