Competing Through Innovation – Montana Business and Technology – 2008 Spring Issue

Welcome to our Spring 2008 issue
of Montana Business & Technology,
a publication designed to highlight
the people, companies and products that are spurring the growth of Montana’s increasingly technology-based economy.

Under Governor Brian Schweitzer Montana
is on the move, with record high employment, record low unemployment, excellent ratings in business tax climate and total state and local tax burden. We have one of the fastest growing economies in the nation and have been rated the #1 business climate in the nation. All of this has helped spur the development of a new economy that has been emerging in the ‘last best place.’

Driven by technological innovation, a new set of industries is beginning
to put Montana on the ‘technology’ map of the United States.
Companies in the biotech, life sciences, information technology,
aerospace and environmental sectors are becoming significant
contributors to our state’s economy.

In this issue you can read about the statewide success of our BioScience Alliance, ways in which companies are preparing their employees for the technology jobs of the future and how we are marketing our ‘restoration’ economy expertise globally.
Our review of the bio-fuels industry on the Hi-Line and the work of Dennis Ketterman in Plentywood will also give you a “feel” of how rural communities are contributing to our economic growth while maintaining our world-class quality of life.

Whether you live here or are just visiting us, I hope you appreciate the business opportunities that you can take advantage of in Montana—
that, while we are a great place to fish, hunt and camp, we are so
much more.

We welcome your comments, suggestions and story ideas.
