Internet criminals gaining ground, experts say. Ways to protect yourself from infected sites

Criminal attacks against major Web sites have grown so common that Internet users have no reliable way to know which sites are safe to visit, no matter how well known those destinations are, security experts say.
News of the latest attack comes from Finjan, an Israeli security firm, which is reporting today that last month it found a large cache of information - including confidential medical records, financial records and business e-mails - sitting unprotected on a computer network server in Malaysia.

Most companies don't publicly report that their Web sites have been attacked. They are detected and publicized by security researchers who routinely track such activity either to advance their knowledge or improve their products.
Researchers, security vendors and companies like Google and Yahoo, whose search engines are sometimes enlisted by cyber criminals, routinely share information with each other, with law enforcement and with the public through blogs or their own Web sites.
