Gazette Opinion: Montana businesses invest time in schools

The largest banquet rooms at Montana State University Billings were filled last Thursday for a community celebration of education. The fourth annual Partners Salute luncheon recognized three dozen businesses that have become Partners in Education with individual Billings public schools. The event honored the 26 members of the class of 2008 who are valedictorians at Central, Senior, Skyview and West high schools.

The Career Center was a pioneer in school-business partnerships and has worked with the Home Builders Association for decades in its home construction classes. As career-oriented classes have expanded, so have partnerships. There are now so many partners at the table, the Career Center needs a bigger table for Beyond Basil Catering, Billings Clinic, Food Services of America, Highgate Senior Living, Montana State University Billings, Solomon Bruce Consulting, St. John's Lutheran Ministries, Taylor Electric, Engineering Inc. and Underriner Motors. These partner businesses provide volunteers at the Career Center, donate materials, mentor students and serve on the center's advisory board, among other things.
