The buzz around geo-tourism in Montana. Governor Schweitzer expects big returns from tourism industry

A new buzzword is making the rounds in tourism destinations like Yellowstone National Park: geotourism.

Like the average tourist, the geotourist wants to get away.

Like the ecotourist, the geotourist wants to tread lightly when he or she gets there.

But unlike the others, the geotourist also wants to preserve and enhance the culture, heritage and well-being of the people who live there. The geotourist wants to know where and how to visit family farms, see homestead churches and experience indigenous cultures.

And the geotourist walks among us.

Governor expects big returns from tourism industry

By DANIEL PERSON Chronicle Staff Writer

Calling them “ambassadors,” Gov. Brian Schweitzer Thursday challenged leaders of Montana’s travel industry to continue growing their businesses.

“You’ve doubled output in the last 10 years, I expect you to double it again in the next seven years,” he said.

Schweitzer spoke to more than 100 industry representatives at his annual Conference on Tourism and Recreation, which ran yesterday and today in West Yellowstone.
