Agriculture at the crossroads in Montana

For Jim Paugh, the money was only part of the reason for leaving the ranch. It was the frustration that sent him packing.
Though nearly 80 years old, he said the constant water disputes with his new neighbors in Gallatin Valley subdivisions made him so mad he was scared he was going to lose his temper and land in trouble.
“I was afraid I’d get in a fight and hurt somebody,” Paugh said from his new ranch northwest of Lewistown. “I got tired of fighting over water. And the traffic. We couldn’t move equipment on the road.”
So he let a few real estate agents know his place was for sale. It didn’t take long before one of them found developers willing to pay $10 million for his 350 acres west of Bozeman.
