Montana Historical Society Receives Grant for Preservation. Applications Requested

The Montana Historical Society has received a $149,979 Preserve America grant that will be used for historic preservation projects across the state.

"This is the third grant that we have received under this federal program, and it gives us momentum to continue to build and care for our historic preservation resources that are good for Montana and good for the economy," Society Director Richard Sims said.

Only 25 states received Preserve America grants in this latest round, Society Preservation Grants Administrator Roxann Lincoln said.

About $100,000 of the grant will be passed on directly to Preserve America communities in Montana, with the remainder being used for a statewide survey of historic resources, and a development seminar with tribal historic preservation offices.

The Society’s State Historic Preservation Office will have local grant applications available within the next few weeks. Projects eligible for funding under this round are local historic resource surveys and research for listings on the National Register of Historic Places, Lincoln said.

Communities that have not yet qualified for Preserve America designation, can apply for the grants, if they have begun the process before the next round of the Society’s grant are announced.

Interested communities can log on to http://www.preserveamerica.gov for information on the program, or call Lincoln at 406-444-7768.

Here are the Montana governments that have received Preserve America designation so far:
Anaconda-Deer Lodge, Billings, Butte-Silver Bow, Fort Benton, Great Falls, Havre, Hill County, Jefferson County, Lewistown, Livingston, Missoula, Red Lodge, Stevensville, Terry, Virginia City.
