Exploring the air: University of Montana seeks more research funding – $22.4MM

Now is the time when universities across the nation pull out their research funding wish lists and go knocking on the doors of their respective congressional delegations.

They go seeking support for the research – and hoping their delegation will sway the whole of Congress when the 2009 federal budget is on the docket next fall.

The University of Montana is no exception, and this year its wish list has 12 requests, fits on one page and totals $22.4 million.

Exploring the air: Study examines health effects

When smoke from summer wildfires shrouds the Missoula Valley, everyone experiences firsthand why the ashen haze isn’t good for us.

We get itchy eyes, we cough more. It’s difficult to breathe. Some of us get headaches, and for those with respiratory and cardiovascular ailments, the smoke can be life threatening.

We all know wood smoke creates unhealthy air and compromises breathing conditions, yet there isn’t a lot of scientific data that tells us why it is bad or at what level the smoke becomes truly problematic.
For parents of asthmatic children and for adults who live with chronic lung disease, there’s good news on this murky topic which has ramifications for us all.

Two University of Montana researchers are midstride in a multiyear, multipronged study that aims to answer the billion-dollar question: “We know wood smoke is bad, but how bad?”
