Business and Geographic Information Systems Special Focus Session at the Intermountain GIS Conference in Missoula

April 10, 1:00pm-6:00pm, Holiday Inn Downtown (Free and open to the public)

The Montana Association of Geographic Information System (GIS) Professionals Intermountain Conference will be held April 8-10 in Missoula, at the Holiday Inn Downtown. As an outreach event, we are sponsoring a special focus session Thursday April 10 from 1-6pm on GIS and Business. This session is free and open to the public.

Afternoon presentations will demonstrate how businesses ranging from home based businesses to Montana’s largest corporations are using an impressive variety of business-focused applications, data and document management, business intelligence, and workflow solutions. Many businesses are turning their site, customers, addresses, service boundarys, or delivery routes into a decision that improves the bottom line. Speakers from leading companies applying GIS to business in Montana will discuss their business solutions in a panel discussion on best practices for GIS and business.

The afternoon and evening will include a business and GIS solutions fair with live demonstrations of Montana applications. Highlights of the sessions include:

· ESRI, the world leader in GIS software will present an overview of how GIS is used by thousands of business segments on a daily basis, and case studies of companies such as Sears, and agencies and organizations such as the US Postal Service and Realtor.com

· Great Harvest Bread Co., a Dillon, MT based national franchise with more than 210 locations nationwide will show how they use Business Analyst for selecting sites, defining territories, and evaluating market potential.

· Geodata Services, Inc. will present examples of forecasting and modeling residential and commercial growth, 3D visualization and applications of business GIS for smart growth, livable communities, and preserving conservation values and traditional lifestyles while encouraging economic development.

· Dr. David Firth, will introduce ways in which the UM School of Business is incorporating the latest GIS and geospatial tools into the undergraduate and MBA programs of every UM business student.

· Montana Means Business, developed by the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and GCS Holdings, Inc., demonstrating one of the most progressive web based tools in the US for market profiles and queries by potential new businesses relocating in Montana, leveraging Montana’s unique statewide parcel map layer.

· Lupine Logic, Inc. will illustrate applications of business asset management, and dynamic real-time analytics in business processes.

If you own or work in a Montana business, you won’t want to miss this opportunity to learn how geospatial technology can work for you.

Research has shown that over 80% of the information contained in individual businesses today has a geographic element. More than two-thirds of the Fortune 500 companies use GIS for business solute ons. While the volume and complexity of this data increases every day, companies need to unlock its value to enhance operational efficiency, deliver cost savings, and improve risk management.

The expanding world of web based business and geospatial tools, and location based services is accessible to even the smallest business today. Montana is one of the only states in the country with standardized statewide efforts to provide the public with parcel ownership maps, transportation maps and addressing that can be applied to improve business operations.

The session will conclude with an open house, applications demonstration and refreshments. The public is invited, and there no fees to attend this event.
