Montana State University faces challenges to cut energy use

When it comes to conservation, some people talk the talk. Bob Lashaway walks the walk.

Lashaway literally walks the mile from his home to his job at Montana State University. He won’t drive, even if it’s 20-below outside.

He wears long johns under his blue jeans n and even pulled up a pant leg Tuesday afternoon to prove it. He keeps sweaters, wool scarves and fingerless gloves in his MSU office. And when he returns home at night, he sleeps with the thermostat set to a nippy 50 degrees.

“In this day and age, people think it’s eccentric,” Lashaway said and smiled. But he believes those are the kinds of habits people n even students and professors — might have to adopt if they’re serious about saving energy.

Lashaway will be one of the key people developing options as MSU tries to meet Gov. Brian Schweitzer’s “20 by ‘10” challenge — that state agencies reduce their energy use 20 percent by the year 2010. As associate vice president for university services, Lashaway is in charge of all campus buildings, grounds and vehicles.
