What do Montanans think about "demand-side management programs, efficiency funds and requirements"? The Environmental Quality Council wants to know - in part of a 21-page online survey.

As of Monday morning, 1,041 responses had been logged, according to legislative staff. The survey ends Friday. The EQC decided last month to poll the public on the 54 recommendations that the Governor's Climate Change Advisory Council made in the Montana Climate Change Action Plan presented to Gov. Brian Schweitzer in November.

Let’s lead by example on climate change

Over the past 30 years, Montana has experienced increased occurrence of fire, decreasing winter snow pack, high summer time temperatures and retreating alpine glaciers, at least partially as a result of human-induced climate change. Taking action on the causes of climate change must start right here in Montana and will be most effective if those actions are taken now.

Taking a proactive stance on climate change, Gov. Brian Schweitzer appointed a Climate Change Advisory Committee in December 2005 to help develop policy recommendations that would decrease Montana’s greenhouse gas emissions (the primary cause of climate change) and simultaneously “save money, conserve energy and bolster the Montana economy.”

The committee, composed of scientists, policy makers, economists, industry spokespersons, local and state government officials, farmers and ranchers, released the final report in November 2007 (http://www.deq.state.mt.us/climatechange/plan.
