Montana Superintendent Linda McCulloch Recognizes School for High Student Achievement

Today, Superintendent Linda McCulloch http://www.opi.state.mt.us/ acknowledged Title I schools serving serve low income children that demonstrated high student achievement in the 2006-2007 school year.

"These schools deserve this recognition as they are not only showing major progress, but have to overcome significant barriers to improve student achievement," said Superintendent Linda McCulloch.

The first awards went to Box Elder High School and Heart Butte Elementary School as two of the 71 schools across the country to be named as a National Title I Distinguished School. Winning schools demonstrated significant, sustained academic improvement in spite of having a 35 percent or higher poverty rate.

Four additional schools received the Montana Title I State Academic Achievement Award. These schools made Adequate Yearly Progress as determined by No Child Left Behind for two consecutive years and exited school improvement status. The schools are Auchard Creek School (Wolf Creek), Box Elder High School, Glacier Elementary School (Cut Bank), Heart Butte Elementary, Hidden Lake Elementary (Cut Bank), and Yellowstone Academy (Billings).

And another eight schools were recognized for making Adequate Yearly Progress last year and may exit improvement next year. These schools are Box Elder 7-8, Hays-Lodge Pole 7-8, Lodge Pole School, Polson High School, Poplar High School, Powell County High School, Riverside 7-8 (Billings) and Rocky Boy School.

Special recognition also went to 22 schools that made Adequate Yearly Progress last year and exited the "watch list" status. These schools are Arlee Elementary, Corvallis 7-8, Dutton Brady Elementary, E.F. Duvall 7-8, Fred Moodry 7-8, Garfield School, Glacier Gateway Elementary, Hellgate High School, Hillside Colony School, L.A. Muldown School, Laurel Middle School, Laurel High School, Lewistown 7-8, Lockwood Middle School, Ronan High School, Shelby Elementary School, St. Ignatius Elementary School, St. Ignatius Middle School, Stevensville High School, Seeley Lake 7-8, Victor Middle School, Washington Middle School.
