A Blueprint for Rural Broadband
| February 20, 2008 |
Only 38 percent of rural Americans have a broadband Internet connection at either home or work, largely because they have less broadband access in general, according to a survey by the Pew Internet and American Life Project.
Working to change that, the Federal Communications Commission and the U.S. Department of Agriculture have launched a new, online resource that gathers all their expertise on bringing broadband services to rural areas into one location. The Web site, Broadband Opportunities for Rural America http://wireless.fcc.gov/outreach/ind ... adband_home , provides information on the different technology platforms available, including cable, wireless and broadband over power line; how to access spectrum necessary to delivery wireless broadband services; how to apply for government funding; data on its deployment; and relevant FCC and USDA proceedings and initiatives.
The site provides guidance on locating companies licensed to provide wireless services in or near rural communities as well as helpful links to other government and private resources related to encouraging rural broadband opportunities.
