Governor, Battelle give science, math a boost
| February 11, 2008 |
More than $13 million in private money will help propel Ohio forward by supporting an effort to raise the science, technology, engineering and math (or STEM) skills of all students, state and Battelle leaders said yesterday.
“Our commitment to STEM is a strategic and important investment, not only for the students but for the future of the state,” Gov. Ted Strickland said. “This is a great day for Ohio education."
The money will be used to create the Ohio STEM Learning Network, which will help the state launch five math- and science-focused schools — following the example set by Metro High School in Columbus — in different regions. These schools will be open to all students, especially low-income and minority youths.
