Montana’s rural hospitals getting wired

Six months ago, a nurse hastily slipped X-rays of car-wreck victims into crisp yellow envelopes, tossed them onto her car seat and raced from Superior to Missoula, where a radiologist read the images and reported back by phone.

It was, quite simply, the way things were done at rural hospitals, the best of several not-so-good options.

Or, even more often, the patients themselves were packed up and shuttled to Missoula, leaving empty the beds – and the coffers – at Mineral Community Hospital. Because time is life in an emergency, Jim Henshaw said, “and you just don’t take that risk. You move the patient.”
