Gov. Jon Huntsman has the right idea about funding for public education. The entire system needs a significant boost, and teacher pay should be the top priority.

Utah's low salaries mean too many teachers are leaving the profession or the state; Utah started this school year 173 teachers short.

Teachers are the cornerstone of any public-ed system. Without qualified, dedicated teachers, indeed, without enough teachers, classrooms get more crowded and our children don't learn what they need to know to go on to college or get jobs that can support a family.
