Energy bill loses local aid funding
By NOELLE STRAUB Gazette Washington Bureau WASHINGTON - Massive renewable-energy incentives and more than $93 million for Montana rural schools and counties were stripped from the energy bill Thursday after a tax package authored by Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., fell short by one vote.
Baucus, as chairman of the tax-writing Finance Committee, had insisted that the energy bill contain a $21.8 billion measure repealing tax breaks for large oil and gas companies and extending renewable energy tax incentives. He also had included funding for the rural schools and communities program in the package.
