Starting up: Can't attract investors? Try bootstrapping
| December 7, 2007 |
In 2001, we had a start-up "plan" for a new semiconductor company in Idaho. Our new venture included land and equipment. Funding hard assets was a known Idaho commodity, so we didn't anticipate any difficulty finding investors. In fact, funding wasn't a problem until we weren't able to acquire the facility we wanted and suddenly became a company without hard assets.
Our revised "plan" was a revolutionary, paradigm-shifting idea. We knew venture capitalists, angel investors and Boise technology millionaires would beat a path to our prospectus to provide funding. We didn't need a factory, we had technology. Everyone knows new technology gets funded by savvy investors, and Microsofts, Microns and Apples emerge.
