What happens when a state invests heavily in high technology?
Just ask officials at the University of Massachusetts, which pulled in a record $41.4 million in licensing revenue and stock sales from technologies and spin-off companies last year, just 13 short years after starting its technology transfer program in 1994.
Closer to home, look at the University of Utah Research Park, where research companies have added more than 4,700 jobs to the state's economy, and the annual in-state productivity of park residents exceeds $550 million. Seventeen companies were spun out of the university in the last 12 months.
