Group seeks to engineer reform. It supports curriculum to boost enrollment in college programs

For one of the youngest foundations in the state, the Kern Family Foundation quickly has become a thorn in the side of Wisconsin's education establishment.
"In the education arena, Wisconsin does not have a plan," Thomas Hefty, president of the private foundation, told the Journal Sentinel's editorial board Monday.
About five years ago, the Waukesha-based foundation began to prod education reforms in grade schools, high schools and universities, starting in the Midwest. It concentrates on science, technology and engineering - areas that it deems most critical to the nation's economic competitiveness and its capacity to innovate.
