Early-college programs push math, science. Dual credit questioned in Idaho

A shifting educational focus toward science, technology, engineering and math means area students may have more opportunities to land jobs that employers are eager to fill.
"Engineers are one of the highest paid bachelor's degree recipients in any area. They are very sought after, so they get very high bachelor's degree paying jobs," said Richard Schoephoerster, dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Texas at El Paso. "It's a great starting salary, and if you get advanced degrees or combine with a management degree, the sky is the limit to where you can go."

Dual credit questioned
Board of Education official says it's time to review system

Community colleges, school districts and students laud dual-credit programs aimed at giving high school students a head start on higher education. But the Idaho State Board of Education could soon take a closer look at the system to ensure equity and consistency across Idaho.
Dual credit lets high school students simultaneously earn credit toward a high school diploma and a postsecondary degree or certificate.
