Start-ups: Small start-ups thrive in Idaho but seldom become lots bigger. Growing our gazelles

One issue concerning Idaho’s entrepreneurial landscape troubles me, and I’m trying to sort it out.

I’ve heard the statistic from the Kauffman Foundation for Entrepreneurship that Idaho is a leading state for small business "gazelles" – that is, fast-growing, dynamic entrepreneurial companies that are quick and nimble.

That all seems great. The puzzling thing is that it seems very few of these gazelles grow into large or even medium-sized businesses. One would think that if in Idaho we lead in small business gazelles, we would naturally be producing a crop of "break-out" companies leading their industries on a national scale.
