Start-ups: Small start-ups thrive in Idaho but seldom become lots bigger. Growing our gazelles
| November 16, 2007 |
One issue concerning Idaho's entrepreneurial landscape troubles me, and I'm trying to sort it out.
I've heard the statistic from the Kauffman Foundation for Entrepreneurship that Idaho is a leading state for small business "gazelles" - that is, fast-growing, dynamic entrepreneurial companies that are quick and nimble.
That all seems great. The puzzling thing is that it seems very few of these gazelles grow into large or even medium-sized businesses. One would think that if in Idaho we lead in small business gazelles, we would naturally be producing a crop of "break-out" companies leading their industries on a national scale.
