Gazette Opinion: Montana's University system must boost efficiency, public support

Education is a dynamic process. The university system will either move ahead on these programs or fall behind. The Board of Regents and Commissioner of Higher Education Sheila Stearns have made significant efforts to move the system forward on access, efficiency and economic development. But much work remains. For example, the system's two-year degree programs have shown the biggest enrollment growth in the past few years, yet only 17 percent of students are in two-year programs while work force projections show that 80 percent of jobs being created in Montana require two years of postsecondary education. College enrollment isn't matching worker needs.
