Prevent your employer from maligning you to others

Q I went to a job fair and thought I had a good interview with a prospective employer. The next day the interviewer, who seemed very interested in hiring me, called my company to verify my employment.
My immediate supervisor told the person to call the human resources department and informed my manager of the call. Later, my manager told me that she, too, had spoken to the prospective employer. A few days later, when I called the prospective employer, the person I spoke with told me the company wasn't going to hire me.
So I am wondering what my manager or the HR person said to the interviewer.
