What Makes a Company A Great Place to Work Today?

October 5, 2007View for printing

Tis the season for workplace rankings, with "best-workplace" lists sprouting everywhere this fall.

From Working Mother magazine's "100 Best Companies" to Business Week's "Best Places to Launch a Career," judges are sizing up employers' flexible scheduling and other perks as criteria for coveted top-employer rankings. And family-friendly companies are looking very different today than they did a few years ago. The waning of boomers with their uptight ways, and the rise of the we-want-it-all millennials, are spurring major shifts in employer programs.

MSU News Service

Businesses from Great Falls, Missoula, Helena and Wolf Point are the winners of the 2007 Montana Family Business Awards.

The businesses, which ranged in size from fewer than 10 employees to more than 50, received their awards at the 2007 Montana State University College of Business State Farm Insurance Family Business Day held recently in Bozeman.

The 2007 top family businesses in Montana are: Little Athens of Great Falls in the very small business category (fewer than 10 employees); Falls Construction Co. of Great Falls in the small business category (10 to 29 employees); Cascade Electric Company of Great Falls and Diversified Plastics, Inc. of Missoula in the medium business category (30-50 employees); Mergenthaler Transfer & Storage Co. of Helena in the large business category (more than 50 employees); and Honeyland, Inc. of Wolf Point in the old business category (operating at least 50 years as a family business). Sletten Construction Co. of Great Falls won the Judge's Special Recognition Award.

"It is wonderful to be able to recognize exemplary family businesses that have all shown a commitment to customer service, family values and diversification to satisfy the needs of their markets, often in challenging situations," said Nancy Dodd, director of the MSU College of Business' Family Business Program and an MSU professor of management. "Family businesses are central to the economic vitality of Montana and the businesses that are honored are perfect examples of why and how family businesses contribute to our communities, our state and our nation."

The Montana Family Business Program is in its 14th year. The MSU College of Business and State Farm Insurance, in honor of Robert Jaedicke, host the program. Stockman Bank underwrote the awards, with additional support for the program provided by Combs Law Firm, PC, and the Montana Chamber of Commerce.
