Students at the University of Montana flunk civics test

The University of Montana came in 28th out of 50 schools in a new report ranking how well colleges teach their students about American history and civics – but all the schools received a failing grade.

The nonprofit Intercollegiate Studies Institute commissioned a study of about 14,000 freshmen and seniors at 50 colleges and universities last fall. The institute favors a limited-government, free-market philosophy and aims to combat what it sees as undue liberal influences on university campuses, according to its president, Kenneth Cribb.

Students were asked 60 multiple-choice questions to measure their knowledge in four subject areas: American history, government, international relations and market economy.

College seniors failed the civic knowledge test and hardly did better than their freshman counterparts, the survey showed. The overall average score for the 7,000 or so seniors who took the exam was 54.2 percent.
