$4.54 million for research in state. Six teams awarded money by Life Sciences Discovery Fund

Six Washington research teams were awarded $4.54 million Tuesday from the Life Sciences Discovery Fund -- the first money to be distributed by the state organization since it was created in 2005.
Beneficial proposals were given more consideration than those that were merely interesting, said former Gov. Gary Locke, who was one of 11 trustees who chose the winners.
The trustees -- four legislators and seven governor appointees -- made their choices with the help of neutral science experts.
