The following we released this week by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The NCES, located within the U.S. Department of Education and the Institute of Education Sciences, is the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data related to education.

As the nation’s students and teachers return to school, here are selected statistics about American schools, students, and the educational process. The information was compiled by IES and derives from the Institute’s research and statistical centers.

Elementary and Secondary Education

* $489.4 billion – Projected expenditure for public elementary and secondary schools in the 2007-08 school year.

* 49.6 million – Estimated number of students enrolled in public elementary and secondary schools in 2007-08.

* 97,000 – Number of public elementary and secondary schools in 2005-06.

* 3.2 million – Projected number of teachers employed in public elementary and secondary schools in 2007-08.

* $9,969 – Projected average expenditure per pupil for fall enrollment in public elementary and secondary schools in 2007-08.

* 1.1 million – Number of students — about 2 percent of all students — who were homeschooled during the 2003 school year.

* 887,000 – Number of students who attended the nation’s approximately 3,300 charter schools during the 2004-05 school year.

* 6.1 million – Estimated number of students enrolled in private elementary and secondary schools in 2007-08.

* 28,000 – Number of private elementary and secondary schools in 2003-04.

* 464,000 – Projected number of teachers employed in private elementary and secondary schools in 2007- 08.

* 93 percent – Percentage of children with disabilities, 3-5 years of age, who received speech language therapy during the 2003-04 school year.

* 42 percent – Percentage of minority students in total public school enrollment in 2005.

* 20 percent – Percentage of school-age children who spoke a language other than English at home in 2005.

* 74 percent – Percentage of public high school students who graduated on time (within 4 years) with a regular diploma in 2003-04.

* 17 percent – Increase in high school completion rates for students with disabilities from 1987 to 2003.

* 1.2 million – Number of high school students taking AP exams in 2005, which more than doubled between 1997 and 2005.

* 10 – Number of programs to enhance beginning reading skills that have evidence of effectiveness from rigorous research.

* 9 – Number of programs to improve the English language literacy or reading achievement of elementary school English language learners that have evidence of effectiveness from rigorous research.

Postsecondary Education

* 69 percent – Percentage of students who enrolled in 2-year and 4-year colleges immediately after high school in 2005 (in 1972, it was 49 percent).

* 79 percent – Percentage of students with disabilities who have been engaged in postsecondary education, work, or training for work up to 2 years after leaving high school.

* 17 percent – Increase in the proportion of students with disabilities participating in postsecondary education from 1987 to 2003.

* 18 million – Projected number of 2-year and 4-year college students, part time and full time, in the 2007- 08 school year.

* 1.3 million – Number of faculty working in 2-year and 4-year colleges in fall 2005.

* 269 percent – Increase in minority enrollment in graduate programs from 1976 to 2005 (from 134,000 to 496,000).

* $15,100 – Average price before aid for one year of full-time undergraduate education at a public 4-year institution in 2003-04 (includes tuition and fees, books and supplies, and other living expenses).

* $21,900 – Average price before aid for one year of full-time master’s degree education at a public institution in 2003-04 (includes tuition and fees, books and supplies, and other living expenses).

* $19,202 – Average cumulative amount borrowed for bachelor’s degree students graduating in 2003- 04.

* $27,200 – Average cumulative amount borrowed for master’s degree students graduating in 2003- 04.
