In Roman times, soldiers were paid with salt, a precious commodity that was expensive and difficult to mine. These conditions gave rise to the saying “Worth his salt,” a term that might apply to the CEOs of today’s public companies.
A competent CEO must have many quali-ties, says Jerry C. Atkin, CEO of SkyWest Airlines and a member of Zions Bancorp’s executive and audit committees and chair of the nominating and corporate governance committee.
