Great Northern Development and the Small Business Development Center are planning fall workshops for the region. We have great partners to work with such as: Assiniboine & Sioux Enterprise Community, Fort Peck Community College, Chambers of Commerce, NE Montana Job Service, Nemont Telephone, MidRiver Communication, along with many local lending institutions.

On Thursday, September 13 the SBA is holding a “Business Information” Workshop in Sidney. This workshop is free and will be held from 7:00 – 9:00 pm at the Northern Plains Agricultural Research Lab. This will cover subjects as: Working with your lender, Assisting Start-ups, Expansions and Existing Business. It will also introduce and review SBA loan programs.

A free SBA workshop, “Cash is King” will be held in Wolf Point on Wednesday, September 26th from 5:00 – 7:00 pm in the GNDC Conference room. Topics are: Is cash flow the same as profitability? What affects cash flow? How does growth affect business? It will also review SBA loan programs.

A “Field to Table Food Workshop” will be held in Glasgow at the Cottonwood Inn on Monday, October 15 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. Topics covered will be: Labeling, food safety, bar codes, up scaling recipes, pricing products, marketing, and writing a business plan. This is a free informational workshop in conjunction with the Ag Conference.

On Tuesday, October 16 a “Field to Table Food Workshop” will be held in Wolf Point at GNDC’s Conference Room from 9:00 – 4:00 pm. A free lunch will be provided and there is no cost for the workshop. Registration will begin at 8:30 am.

“Conflict/Resolutions” will be held at the GNDC conference room in Wolf Point. The full day workshop will be held on Thursday, October 25th from 8:30 – 4:00 pm, cost is $75.00. The instructor for the course will be Greg Holler-Dinsmore. There is a limited number of seating, please call to reserve your place.

An “Nxlevel Class” for Indianpreneurship will be held in October at the Enterprise Community Building in Wolf Point. The Class is tentatively set for Monday – Friday from 1:00 – 4:00 pm and will be completed in two weeks. Participants enrolled in the program will learn how to develop and write a business plan during the session. Presenters will relate real life situations to the participants and discuss with them how to survive and grow in the ever changing business world.

This fall “QuickBooks in a Day” will be held at the NE Montana Job Service in Glasgow. The workshop will be from 8:30 – 4:00 pm and the cost will be $75.00.

A qualified CPA will instruct the class. A date has not yet been set. Please call for information and leave your name if you are interested.

“Listening to Your Business” is a 2-3 hour workshop being planned for this fall or winter. This will help you evaluate and measure your personal strategies as well as develop a three year vision for your business. It will answer the question, “What do I really want from my business and how do I get it?” This program is designed for entrepreneurs to either launch or to grow your business to the desired stage.

Time & location to be announced, cost is $15.00 and includes a participant guide.

It’s never too late to “Plan Your Exit”. Whether you’re a start-up, family owned, or existing business, you should be making plans of how you are going to sell, turn your business over to your family, or close your doors. Take control of your situation and make money in the process of changing your occupation and life style. Plans are being made to offer this exciting workshop at various locations with a minimal charge.

A future workshop planned is “Board Etiquette, Policy & Procedures, and Role of Board Members”. This training will be targeted for Development Corporations, City Councils, County Commissioners, Chambers of Commerce, Hospital Boards, MT Cowboy Hall of Fame, Tribal Entities, Lending Institutions, Schools, Grain Elevators, and Cooperatives. Those that are encouraged to attend are the President, Vice President and the Executive Directors from the above Institutions. All board members would benefit from the training.

“Annie’s Project”, developed at Iowa State University, is a nationally recognized program designed to empower farm women to be better business managers, operators and partners through a series of educational sessions covering the business of farming and ranching. The program has been well received in other states across the Midwest and we are excited to partner in bringing Annie’s Project to our region. Plans are being made to hold six 3-hour sessions in 3 locations running from January 22- February 26, 2008. There will be a registration fee of $100 per participant.
