American Prairie Reserve – June 2007 Newsletter

Green is everywhere on the prairie this month. Unusually high levels of rain and snow have filled
watering holes to their brims and seasonal creeks are running at surprisingly high flows.

Martha
Kauffman of World Wildlife Fund http://www.worldwildlife.org/ , Bill Willcutt of APF http://www.americanprairie.org/ , members of the Montana Conservation Corp (MCC) and
others who have been planting riparian trees and shrubs are delighted with the onslaught of precipitation. What are
tiny plantings today will eventually evolve into miles of rich habitat for a multitude of high plains critters.

We continue to make good progress on all three key aspects of our vision, which includes building an extraordinary wildlife reserve, ensuring public access and being a positive force with regards to local economics. We are particularly pleased that our efforts at increasing public access are bearing fruit. A special thanks goes to Montana Outdoor Science School (MOSS)http://www.outdoorscience.org/ for partnering with APF to create these learning adventures for local youth.

Visits by project supporters are averaging one tour per week. The slick, gumbo-laden roads have provided each group of visitors with some true adventure, and more than once have inspired the question, “Any chance we might not make it out of here?” All have made it back to dry pavement but not before being awed by the incredible landscape and the springtime wildlife and birds.

I hope you enjoy the news items below, and I hope we might spend some time on the prairie with you soon.
