At heart, Peter Stark is an environmentalist.

He’s also a gifted writer, the author of two books as well as articles for Outside, Smithsonian, the New Yorker and other magazines.

So at times the Missoula man seems, if not sheepish, at least a little surprised to find himself running a wood-products business.

Stark’s company, North Slope Sustainable Wood http://www.northslopewood.com/about.htm, manufactures floor boards using small-diameter larch that’s harvested during forest thinning and restoration projects.
