Computer program offers virtual fire management

While most people think wildfires are battled on the ground, new computer programs are aiding firefighters even before a spark turns into an inferno.

The “Terrain Navigator Pro” can look at weather data, slope angles and fuels to help predict fire behavior in specific areas, notes Sonny Stieger, a fire behavior analyst.

The practical application can be humbling.
